The genus Kniphofia was named in honour of Johannes Hieronymus Kniphof, 1704-1763, who was a professor of medicine at Erfurt University in Germany.Kniphofia belongs to the family Asphodelaceae which comprises 17 genera (10 of which occur in South Africa) and about 750 species.
About this cultivar: Kniphofia rooperi is probably the most distinctive of the classic red-hot poker species. The flowers might not keep their colour as long as some of the cultivars we have but the plants are robust, evergreen, and produce distinctive large broadly spherical flower heads in bright red and yellow. K. northiae AGM – the best poker for foliage – its agave-like rosettes lend an exotic touch. Much hardier than it looks. Height up to 170cm (70in) K. rooperi AGM – unmistakable round flowerheads of orange, red and yellow. Although it blooms in winter in its native habitat, forms in cultivation including ‘Maxima Globosa’ flower in Kniphofia has many aliases; Torch Lily, Tritoma, as well as the common Red Hot Poker, but whatever name you use it elicits comments when it lights up the garden. With good drainage in a sunny location, it is easy to care for, has few pests and diseases that bother it, and is drought tolerant once established.
